Team Coordinator & Associate Counsellor
Ruth Scott
After completing a Level 3 Teaching Assistant course in July 2021 I was left with a desire to learn more. Although I enjoyed the job I felt I had more to offer, this desire to learn how I could support others led me to consider counselling. In September 2021 I enrolled on the level 2 Counselling Skills course at East Riding College, I went on to complete level 2 in December 2021 and Level 3 in July 2022, I have now successfully completed the foundation degree course ‘Contemporary Approaches in Counselling’. This foundation of learning has given me the skills and desire to pursue a career in counselling. The thing I have found the most compelling in this role is the opportunity to learn and develop relationships. Although I have found this overwhelming at times, through continued development and knowledge of self-awareness, I feel I am growing not only as a student counsellor but also as a person. I am a kind, accepting, open minded, non-judgemental and positive person, I have always loved working with people as you will be able to see from my past job roles. I worked as a swimming teacher for over 12 years prior to starting my degree. During this time I worked with children, young people and adults. The job wasn’t just about teaching swimming techniques, it was about building and developing relationships, listening and communicating in age appropriate language that was relatable to the student or students. I worked closely with my students to ensure their needs were met and supported throughout their time with me, some required more support and patience than others. I worked with people from all walks of life from people with disabilities, different religions, mental health issues, confidence issues, gender identity issues, some privileged and some not so, some more challenging than others, some more capable than they would ever believe. I treat them all with the same amount of respect and dignity and learnt to work with them in a manner tailored to their needs. At times this also involved communicating and working alongside parents, teachers, carers or other support networks, occasionally my role also required me to report safeguarding issues to the relevant authorities. I have worked as a singer songwriter for over 7 years, this is a hobby that I’ve been lucky to pursue professionally (although I’m not going to lie, hardly get any money for). I love writing, whether it be a song, poem or journaling, I personally find this can be a really therapeutic experience, a way to express yourself with no limits as to what you can or cannot say, I feel sometimes things can be easier to write down than say, journalling has also helped me to gain perspective and recognise my own patterns of behaviour. I worked on a project called Thee Minute Heros for The Warren a few years ago, they worked with some young people doing free writing. I was asked to read the students work, choose one and turn the words into a song. The album which featured other Hull artists was a really amazing project to be involved with and I felt lucky to be part of it. Being trusted to put personal words into a song felt like a real privilege and something I’d love to get involved with again to be honest. After working for the same company for over 22 years I left to complete my foundation degree in counselling. It’s honestly the first time in my life that I have felt like I’m doing something that I really want to pursue as a career. I genuinely find people interesting, I love listening and giving people the opportunity to be heard. Having completed my Student Counselling Placement with Time to Listen CIC, I am delighted to have joined them as a qualified, Associate Counsellor. As of the 25th of September 2024 I am also part time team coordinator. This role involves supporting the clinical leads with processing new referrals into our service.
