Team Coordinator & Associate Counsellor
Ruth Scott
After completing a Level 3 Teaching Assistant course in July 2021 I was left with a desire to learn more. Although I enjoyed the job I felt I had more to offer, this desire to learn how I could support others led me to consider counselling. In September 2021 I enrolled on the level 2 Counselling Skills course at East Riding College, I went on to complete level 2 in December 2021 and Level 3 in July 2022, I have now successfully completed the foundation degree course ‘Contemporary Approaches in Counselling’. This foundation of learning has given me the skills and desire to pursue a career in counselling. The thing I have found the most compelling in this role is the opportunity to learn and develop relationships. Although I have found this overwhelming at times, through continued development and knowledge of self-awareness, I feel I am growing not only as a student counsellor but also as a person. I am a kind, accepting, open minded, non-judgemental and positive person, I have always loved working with people as you will be able to see from my past job roles. I worked as a swimming teacher for over 12 years prior to starting my degree. During this time I worked with children, young people and adults. The job wasn’t just about teaching swimming techniques, it was about building and developing relationships, listening and communicating in age appropriate language that was relatable to the student or students. I worked closely with my students to ensure their needs were met and supported throughout their time with me, some required more support and patience than others. I worked with people from all walks of life from people with disabilities, different religions, mental health issues, confidence issues, gender identity issues, some privileged and some not so, some more challenging than others, some more capable than they would ever believe. I treat them all with the same amount of respect and dignity and learnt to work with them in a manner tailored to their needs. At times this also involved communicating and working alongside parents, teachers, carers or other support networks, occasionally my role also required me to report safeguarding issues to the relevant authorities. I have worked as a singer songwriter for over 7 years, this is a hobby that I’ve been lucky to pursue professionally (although I’m not going to lie, hardly get any money for). I love writing, whether it be a song, poem or journaling, I personally find this can be a really therapeutic experience, a way to express yourself with no limits as to what you can or cannot say, I feel sometimes things can be easier to write down than say, journalling has also helped me to gain perspective and recognise my own patterns of behaviour. I worked on a project called Thee Minute Heros for The Warren a few years ago, they worked with some young people doing free writing. I was asked to read the students work, choose one and turn the words into a song. The album which featured other Hull artists was a really amazing project to be involved with and I felt lucky to be part of it. Being trusted to put personal words into a song felt like a real privilege and something I’d love to get involved with again to be honest. After working for the same company for over 22 years I left to complete my foundation degree in counselling. It’s honestly the first time in my life that I have felt like I’m doing something that I really want to pursue as a career. I genuinely find people interesting, I love listening and giving people the opportunity to be heard. Having completed my Student Counselling Placement with Time to Listen CIC, I am delighted to have joined them as a qualified, Associate Counsellor. As of the 25th of September 2024 I am also part time team coordinator. This role involves supporting the clinical leads with processing new referrals into our service. Magda Laskowska
Hello, thank you for visiting my profile. Hope you get an idea of what I offer and how I support you. I am an experienced and certified psychotherapy counsellor and a psychotherapist who works with individual clients, couples, both adults and teenagers. My working style is warm, empathetic and supportive and I am extremely passionate about working with my clients. I offer sessions in a variety of ways to meet your needs, whether online, outdoors or face-to-face. I work relationally and creatively bringing together many disciplines such as transactional analysis, attachment theory, polyvagal theory, and trauma-informed therapy and many more. I am particularly interested in childhood trauma, domestic violence / abuse, loss and death. I also have experience of anxiety, mental health, divorce, and separation. In my opinion counselling and therapy is not about fixing you or finding what is wrong with you. It is about understanding, finding, clarifying and helping you to work through complex, difficult emotions. Trauma and traumatic experiences can be something you have kept as a "secret" for too long or they are still affecting your life one way or another. In our sessions I will support you to talk about your experiences without judgement and within the confidentiality agreement. I think the key to successful psychotherapy lies in the relationship between the client and the therapist. In this sense, I empathise and work relationally at your own pace. I respect and appreciate that your experience is unique to you and understand how difficult it is to find support. I look forward to welcoming you to my therapy space and will make sure you feel comfortable from the moment you contact me. I believe that we all have the right to be heard and understand. By providing ethical and empathic therapeutic relationships, I will help you to find your own healing path and make changes towards your personal growth and well-being. I bring 25 years’ experience of supporting people to reach their potential, working in both private business and Secondary school roles. I’m excited and privileged to now have the opportunity to support people through my placement here. I am in my first year of a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling at East Riding College, having successfully completed the Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills there in 2022. Prior to this I completed a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills which began my passion for counselling. In my school role, I am the Senior Mental Health lead and a Mental Health First Aider; I have experience of providing support for staff and students sensitively and non-judgementally, and am calm in a crisis. I am a student member of the BACP, which means I am committed to working ethically, and respecting confidentiality, equality and diversity. My approach to counselling is Person-Centred in focus, which means I believe everyone has the capacity to build positive change for themselves as an individual, with the right support. I will work with you empathically, non-judgementally, and kindly to help you to explore what you choose to bring within a safe space. I believe a trusting therapeutic relationship is a powerful way of discovering ways to improve wellbeing, without being told what to do; it’s about you finding the right answers for you. I have a messy, loud, loving blended family, including 2 children, 2 bonus children, and a grown up step-daughter. I love animals and have a house-full, who contribute to the chaos, and I enjoy horse-riding and reading. Student Counsellor
Jacqueline Weaver
I am currently in my second year of the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling at East Riding College, having previously worked within the education system for over 30 years. I feel very fortunate to have worked with so many different children and adults with a wide range of abilities and backgrounds and it has made me very aware of the importance of valuing the individual, showing them respect and taking the time to gain their trust. As a person-centred counselling student, the emphasis is on building a therapeutic relationship with the client, which I see as essential in helping to create an empathic, non-judgemental and safe environment for the client to feel empowered to make positive changes.
